Why do we take photos?

Almost everyone has a smartphone on them, regardless of what they are doing or where they are going, allowing us to capture special moments and memories wherever we are. We are able to take hundreds of photos a day, selfies, kids sports, a trip to the park, Sunsets. We record our daily lives as part of our culture. We take photos to remember moments, people and places. But is it more than that? Why do we take photos?

To recreate a feeling
We take photos to remind ourselves of a feeling. It’s not just remembering something that happened, it’s recalling the emotions and sensations that were present at that time too. Taking a photo of your children playing together, the time they took their first steps or stated school, a holiday and seeing something truly magical while you were travelling. You can remember the exact moment you realised you wanted to preserve this beauty forever in a photo. Looking back on such photos as you get older will make your feelings evolve too, making one-off moments like this into so much more - bittersweet memories, joyous reflections and reminders of life's beauty. As we get older, having somewhere to record and capture the moment along with how you were feeling at the time is key. Being able to then share those moments and memories with loved ones is a treasure for both you and them.

To create memories
We take photos to create small memories for ourselves. In the chaos of everyday life, little moments get lost. Taking a photo of your child at rest, at play or when they’ve climbed to the top of the slide all by themselves is a moment you might not fully appreciate at the time. But when they're 16 years old and busy with their social lives, that quick click of a proud kid on the top of the slide will warm your heart. Taking the time to reflect the small moments in life can make you appreciate it more. It also is a wonderful way to capture your child's childhood and remember those key milestones and the small moments that make you smile. Take photos to capture everyday life and to celebrate the little things. Time goes so quickly and before long, our children are 18 and are starting their next chapter of their lives.
To share our lives
We take photos to record our family history – from the moment we are born, our lives are documented by our parents, and we in turn, do the same for our children. As well as the little moments, we need to record the big ones. Birthdays, anniversaries, gatherings, houses we lived in and holidays we took. These are things that we know we want to remember. The family holiday where you learnt to swim, or overcoming an obstacle, that first speech you had at school. These moments become part of our biography, bigger than just our story. And shared stories mean that the same photograph can evoke different things for different people. This brings layers to your family's story, making it that much more full. Creating a home for these family moments can be as simple as scanning old photos, and capturing the story to help us preserve history. Being able to have your parents and grandparents recording their moments will help ensure that their treasured memories are preserved.

To capture our history for the future
We take photos to tell our story. Not only that but taking photos allows us to tell richer stories. We use photos to help capture the moment and then we record that moment so when memories fade and details get a hazy one photograph can be the spark to bring it all back to life. Without that spark, stories may get lost forever. With photos, your stories live on and with keepsake journals photos and memories last a lifetime. Those stories and photos are treasured and the memory lives on.

Record your memories in a keepsake book.
